About Payal Emery, the Artistic Nurse

Payal Emery, professional artist and family nurse practitioner, has blended her worlds together to create the Artistic Nurse. Painting unique, powerful, colorful artwork has become her passion, and her passion has helped others find their own inspiration and spread their joy. Art and creativity can free voices.

"Live life colorfully. Art has the power to truly heal you.
Be the artist of your life, painting color, love, adventure
with your own brushstrokes!"
-Payal Emery

Payal is married to her Jamaican husband Jason, who is similar but also her polar opposite. Marriage has been quite an adventure for them and they have a lot of fun together. Payal is a mother of two artistic, wild, unique and animated sons. She and her family are always dancing and finding fun ways to be creative with games, obstacle courses, art, cooking and more.

Payal was once painfully shy and unable to speak up, but over the years she has transformed and learned firsthand the importance of personal strength and perseverance. Her art raises awareness for such causes as animal conservation, mental health, human rights, health and education. Payal believes self-expression is vital in our journey and that by using art, dance and creativity, we all can feel better.

Payal creates artwork as seen in this painting and picture of her two sons, and she wants to do this for other families, where everyone can come together and create their backgrounds and collage photos on top.  Taj and Jai created the fun colorful background and Payal added their collage on top!

“It is such a beautiful unique way of having family photos on the wall.”

Born and raised in coastal Connecticut, she fell in love with art because of an elementary teacher. While attending college, Payal watched her roommate use acrylic paints and canvases, and her love rekindled. She also explored various science and health fields and later worked as a Transplant Nurse with an incredible team at Yale New Haven Hospital. Payal has also gone on life-changing medical mission in Cuzco, Peru. While working as a nurse, she went to school to become a Family Nurse Practitioner, but the artist within never left her.

As a Nurse Practitioner, Payal helps her patients heal physically, emotionally and mentally. She listens to her patients and teaches them self-care and stress management skills. During this time in Payal’s life, her dream of going to art school came true, and she took classes at the Milan Art Institute. She found her purpose; giving a voice to those who feel unheard. As a nurse practitioner, artist and visionary, Payal finds creative solutions for her patients and her clients.

As soon as she is home from work, or whenever her children are napping or at school, Payal immerses herself in her art studio. Her art studio is open year-round with beautiful views of wildlife and plenty of sunshine. She is blessed to have a studio of her own where she can de-stress and express her inner voice. It provides a place for her own healing.

Her two sons love being in the studio as well. They express themselves so freely and just let it go with their colors and brushstrokes. Her sons create their own art and help create many backgrounds for Payal’s artworks.  Jai used nature to make unique marks and Taj used his truck to wheel the paint on the canvas.

Jai her oldest son loves recreating Payal's artworks in his own unique way. He is a talented dancer and painter, and he often says, "I love using my imagination to create whatever I want." Jai is a philosopher, and his passion for life keeps his family firmly grounded in their dreams. He is a hero, the one who will hold your hand in a dark room.

Payal's younger son Taj has autism, and she is an enthusiastic advocate for his autonomy and journey. From inflexibility, to speech delay, to lack of communication, to major meltdowns, it has been a very huge challenge. Finding therapists who really connect with Taj involves the whole family. With love and support, he has truly blossomed and his unique personality is shining. Taj has an amazing way of looking at life. He loves building, creating, cooking and playing, especially with his toy vehicles that have wheels. Taj has even used their wheels to paint on the canvas.

Payal’s sons have provided so much inspiration for her, and they have helped her to let go of imperfection and feel more free. She creates original artworkpet portraits, healing art and much more for others in her studio, usually with one or both of her sons by her side.

The passing of her dogs, an American Eskimo and Pitbull, changed Payal as she grieved and searched her soul. Her two dogs were the loves of her life, and she misses them every day. The bond with one's fur soulmates is so profound. She feels honored to express those feelings every time she creates a pet portrait commissions.

When Payal is in her studio, her process for creating art comes to life. She is full of energy, dancing, and dabbing a brush into brightly colored paint and spreading layers across canvases that capture light and love.

She loves to read and learn more about her themes in her paintings. She also listens to the music of an artist while painting it and weaves the songs into the artwork in a deeper way.

Musicians such as Prince share in her hand as she artfully renders onto canvas Prince’s passion written into his songs. Animals such as a matriarchal elephant herd with their calves roam safely in their habitats as Payal depicts the importance of animal rights and land conservation. Heroes fight alongside Payal as they empower others to be their authentic selves. Payal’s passion is a belief that people can not only be happier and more joyful through art, but that they can also use art to experience a calm mind, spread their magic and change the world.

And she has a lot of fun while painting which is expressed in the joyful colors.

Her mission is to spread this joy to others and let everyone know that their voice matters. We all deserve to be happy, full of inspiration and thirsty for adventure. Anyone can create art and share their message.

Payal's vision is to create joyful and inspirational artworks that speak to the soul and inspire people to pursue creative expression in their own way.
